Videotape by Don DeLillo

Videotape talks about this person watching television, the imagines in the TV shows this girl who is videotaping this man driving a car. It goes on and on and nothing seen to happen, but the view is caught on the scenery because it seems so realistic is catchy. Finally, the girl caught the moment when the man is shot by another drivers and the twelve year old girl keeps on filming until the view sees when the men dies or starts to past out. The viewer calls his wife because he knows this is the climax of the tape. I think that sometimes we are witnesses to things just by accident and that we also get the best pictures and thing when we are not trying so hard.

Cathedral by Raymond Carver

The story is seen from first person point of view. Is about this man whose wife’s friend comes to visit. The big thing is the visitor is blind and he doesn’t seem like a blind man. Cathedral pops out when a television documentary shows European cathedral and the main character describes the blind mind a cathedral and they eventually end up painting one together. Through the process the man learns that he did know how a cathedral is and that the blind man has great wisdom. The whole message the story send is that the main character was the really blind one because he didn’t value what he had.

The short Happy Life of Francis Macomber by Ernest Hemingway

The story narrates the life of this hunter whose life seems cool to his admires but is all acting. The real truth is Francis Macomber fakes to be this great hunter, who has a beautiful wife, who actually betrays him. His death is suppose to be an accident, but is it? I think that the event happening in the story can totally happen in real life. I bet there a few famous people that are just an act , and who’s fortune was based on that. There are also a lot of stories narrating how people had killed their family member to their fortune, will, insurance and so forth.

Ode on a Grecian Urn by John Keats.

The urn tell us a story that I not be written but can be interpreted. It tell the story of this couple whose love is great. They are still in time and under a tree, and happiness is all they know. Beauty is all they know and need to know. I personally think the idea that the urn has a story painted in it is extremely important, the fact is there is more space for imagination. It also tell a important moment one that shows happiness, sadness, joy or any good emotion that could had lasted a few moments but that is engraved for years to come.

Filling Station by Elizabeth Bishop

The whole idea of filling station is that we have someone that love us. The narrator describes a gas station and what she sees. She describes how everything seems dirty from first impression but if time is given she sees that things are not always what it seems. I think that the author is saying that we shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover. At first impression we just the surface of things but we time we see more than that. It also means we are all love at the end it says that “somebody loves us all”. Yet someone seems to spend time watering the plan and fixing the cans, she refers that someone cares for a little of organization and life.

"The Storm" by Kate Chopin

This story is literally like a storm. While a storm (cyclone) was going by a series of event took place. Calixta for example gave shelter to a man she had held a relationship in the past. She also betrayed her husband with this man. What I couldn’t believe that she got so caught up in the moment that she forgot that her husband and son were out during a huge storm. Neither could I believe that she acted like nothing happen when her family came home. I also think that it was a big coincidence that Alcee was around and need a shelter.

"Oedipus Rex" by Sophocles

I wasn’t really surprise of how Oedipus turned out. In fact, neither did back when I was in High School. I had read a lot of Greek tragedy and I’m quite used to it. There is the story of Perseus, Hercules, Antagone, Romeo and Juliet. I don’t really like tragedies because I think that story are meant for people to see that bad ones always pay and the good get their happy ending. I feel pity for Oedipus, I think that he couldn’t fight his fate, neither did Perseus. I had always heard that we can run away from our fate, that it would get us. Oedipus went away and Persues was sent away, but at the end fate caught up with them.

"The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson

This story is very different to the lottery million look forward every Wednesday/Saturday. In real life lottery is a matter of good luck and fortune; quite different to the story. I think the story goes beyond what we see. For instance, it may be saying that’s what may really happen when someone wins the lottery, well not literally, but it might be saying that envy turn friends into enemies. I think that the author rely on the fact that combat duty is considered a lottery. This story really surprise me because I a was hoping for a happy ending. I notice through the story everyone seemed to be looking forward the big moment. Neither could I believe that her own kid throw stones at her.

"A Worth Path" Eudora Welty

The story narrates how Phoenix Jackson makes the path all the way to town. Behind the hold trip there is a really strong reason that we do not know until the end. This woman is brave and nothing stops her. Her love for her grandson is probably what gives her the strength to go on. For instance when she stops to rest she imagines a boy giving her something to eat; it was probably her grandson. She doesn’t remember the reason she is in the doctors office herself until the nurse ask her for her grandson, meaning she was so use to this that she had forgotten what she was doing it for but knew it was the right thing. I think that this happen to us in life.

"How to Watch Your Brother Die"

The poet described all he had to go through when his brother was dying. He describes what he felt about his brother homosexuality. It sounded hard how he had to face the reality of his brother dead. Something that seems at the beginning he couldn’t accept he did in the worst moments. I think he understood that it was also hard for his brother to face what people thought about his actions. I think that it was also harsh that his wife herself wouldn’t want to hear about his brother. But I totally think that he did right by trying to save his brother, being there for him in his last moments and supporting his brother partner

"Sura 89 The Dawn"

This sura address the fact that a lot of are ungiving. People care to much for material things. When things are going good they replied their god had honored them but when they go hungry they believe their good disdain them. This sura touch the point that many people are ungiving to the orphan. I think that this is really true but I also think that sometimes people say that they are really religious and they do more harm that does that are not. I think that we should do good no matter what, ”is better to give than to receive”. I feel great when I can help someone.

"Life's Brief Candle:(...) by Hobart W. Walling

This is an article that was meant to be useful for those interested in the cycles humans go before their deaths. It explains each process and the reason for. Denial is considering a common response to those facing death from illness. Anger is the follow up, those condemn to death show anger towards their god, doctor or those to whom they might held responsible. Bargaining is when the person is willing to negotiate and put their life in a doctor or god’s hands. Depression is the fourth stage; the person feels “powerless, hopeless, guilt…” And last acceptance is the final stage when the person accepts that it’s a cycle of life.

"Design" Robert Frost

This poem focus on mother’s nature design. In it the narrator describes a spider that pose on a flower. He also comments that spiders are part of characters, probably referring to myths and legend. But is also compares and contrast the flower that seem delicate to the spider who appear to be the opposite. The author also wonders why the spider on the flower is. Finally he state; what but design of darkness to appall?-If design govern in a thing so small. Everything is part of some sort of design. I think that the author does not like spiders really much; must of his words refer to the spider as something awful malicious.

"The Shape of the Sword" Jorge Luis Borges

I personally like it this story because is a story within a story. Borges narrates how this man known as the ‘ English man’ narrate this story how some was betrayed by someone he thought was his friend. Through out the story readers think that he is the victim, but at the end he confess that he that he betrayed the Moon the antagonist. The scar he carries across his face is the result of his actions. I think that this scar is more of a symbol in the story because I think that Moon carries not only a physical but a mental scar. I think that his guilt has affected his life deeply.

"A&P" by John Updike

This story takes place at a shop. The main character Sammy is at the cashier and describe each person that comes and leaves the place. Though out the story he pay close attention to some girls that are in their bathing suits .This is what causes the problem with the manager, to whom the way the girls are dressed is wrong. When the manager seem to be lecturing the girls Sammy defend them and quits his job. I think he got caught in the moment and we don't analyze it. I think that this story is really realistic because sometimes we make the wrong decision because we are guided by anger.

"Powder" by Tobias Wolf

In Powder the narrator recount how he goes away with his father right before Christmas. They go through lots to be able to come back before Christmas dinner. The point is the kid does not trust his father and thinks he is irresponsible. To the kid's surprise his father does not only fools the police but he also gets home in time. Through out the story the kid describes certain moments where he and his father talk. He mentions how he feels about him. He assures that he is even more responsible himself and gives detailed examples. He seems surprise when he bring up that his father makes it in time enough for the mother not to make the split final. At the end he confess that he was wrong about his father.
